Design Excellence Award - Honorable Mention

Worked with the interventional radiology department of UW Hospital to develop device to quantify errors related to CT machine couch translation and gantry tilt. Our team conducted in-field research and toured the interventional radiology department working directly with nurses and technicians to understand their needs and use case of a device that would fit cleanly into their work flow.

Developed a modular 3D-printed assembly which took advantage of the difference in density between the air and the PLA filament, creating identifiable void spaces that would appear in a CT scan to demonstrate either an acceptable or unacceptable outcome for a given tolerance. There were also "ramps" that would create rectangles in the CT scan, which could then be measured and used to quantify the error if an unacceptable result was found. The device was verified with calipers to ensure the 3D Prototype met design intent.

I authored instructions for use of the device. These instructions were then used during a low-fidelity usability assessment in which the technicians were able to successfully trial the device. This design process was documented via LabArchives to mimic a light-weight Design History File.
